Cordex Apps: CORDEX full form Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment. It is in charge for progressing and coordinating the science and application of regional climate expanding models through global partnerships. SMHI has been hosting the project office since 2009.

What is regional downscaling?

A Global Climate Model (GCM) can provide reliable prediction info on scales of about 1000 by 1000km, covering what could be a vastly opposing landscape (from very mountainous to flat coastal plains, for example) with wildly varying potential for floods, droughts or other risky events. Regional Climate Models (RCM) and Empirical Statistical Downscaling (ESD), applied over a limited area and driven by GCMs, can provide info on much smaller scales supporting the more detailed impact and adaptation assessment and planning vital in many vulnerable regions of the world.

Why do we need Regional Climate Downscaling?

Global Climate Model (GCM) can provide to make decisions on climate change moderation estimate of how the earth’s climate may change. Thus, these results are the primary motivation for the international community to make decisions on climate change mitigation. However, the impacts of a changing environment, and the adaptation strategies required to deal with them, will happen on extra-regional and national scales. This is where Regional Climate Downscaling (RCD) has a significant role to play by providing projections with much greater detail and a more accurate representation of localized extreme events.

Regional climate downscaling (RCD) techniques, including both dynamical and statistical approaches, are progressively used to provide higher-resolution climate info than is available directly from contemporary global climate models. The methods available, their applications, and the community using them are broad and varied, and it is a growing area. It is essential, however, that these techniques, and the results they produce, be applied appropriately and that their strengths and weaknesses are understood. This requires a better evaluation and quantification of the performance of the different techniques for application to specific problems.

CORDEX Apps Goals

  4. To encourage communication and knowledge exchange with users of regional climate info

What is CORDEX Africa

CORDEX-Africa contains a dynamic group of young (and some less young) scientists working with data from CORDEX downscaling over the CORDEX African domain. The Cordex-Africa initiative has been developing to examine downscaled regional climate data over the CORDEX-African field, train new climate scientists in climate data analysis techniques and engage users of climate info in both sector-specific and region/space-based applications. The CORDEX-Africa Analysis campaign is designing on the following ethos,

A – Analysis: Emerging methods and tools to analyze atmospheric processes over Africa and how these may change in the future

F – Foci: Addressing critical meteorological and influences knowledge gaps

R – Regional messages: Presenting info for crucial regions in the continent

I – Integrated approach: Taking together climate and vulnerability-impact-adaptation scientists to recognize and address critical climate susceptibilities

C – Capacity development: Long-term association between African scientists and key global institutions for career progress

A – Application: Linking the science-society divide through altering climate data into actionable information

4 regional teams (west, central, east, and southern Africa) address region-specific climate questions, and one thematic group considers applied questions such as biodiversity, health hydrology, and agriculture. Memberships of these teams have met as funding has allowed and, to date, have formed 11 papers for academic publication during 2011-2013 (see Phase 1 and Publications links below).

Thanks to Swedish funders, this examination and user engagement work has continued. Between 2015 and the end of 2017, more engagements have taken place, and more are planned (see Phase 2 link below).

CSAG coordinates CORDEX-Africa activities and sources funding to run them with its partners. The International Project Office strongly supports CORDEX and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute.
